Pacemaker and Defibrillators

These highly sophisticated devices consist of tiny computers and power sources which are about the size of a dollar coin, and flexible wires advanced into your heart through a shoulder vein. They are capable of monitoring your heart rhythm, beat by beat, and of stimulating the heart back to normal rhythm if necessary.

The implant procedure is considered minor surgery resulting in a small two inch incision just below your shoulder bone to implant the device under your skin fat. You will require overnight hospital admission. General anesthesia is not usually required.

The electrophysiologists at FCI are highly specialized cardiologists that offer these technologically advanced devices. Biventricular pacing is an additional therapy for congestive heart failure that is also performed by FCI Heart Center staff.
